Loshitzky (Univ. of East London, UK) here expands on her earlier fine work on cinema and politics: The Radical Faces of Godard and Bertolucci (CH, Sep'95, 33-0195) and Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen (CH, Jul'02, 39-6318). She works through contemporary European films that foreground migration, with the goal of describing each film's view of 'fortress Europe.' Loshitzky returns to Bernardo Bertolucci in Besieged (1998), while picking out Godardian elements in both Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995) and Michael Winterbottom's 'Camp Trilogy' (In This World, Code 46, The Road to Guantanamo). She also discusses the Swiss film Journey of Hope (1990) and Stephen Frears's Dirty Pretty Things (2002). The range of films Loshitzky takes on is wide, but she makes no claim for comprehensiveness. She notes that she selects 'hegemonic' rather than 'minority discourse' films, i.e., films made by 'hosts' rather than 'strangers.' Given that principle of selection, this reviewer could have done with more unmasking of hegemonic ideology and less letting the films speak--however critically--for themselves. Me encanto uno que se llama (managing Gods money... Administrando el dinero de Dios) pero ese libro no lo encontre en espanol.
Este pequeño libro es muy facil de leer y va directo al punto. Nos enseña que todo lo que tenemos es de Dios. Y el dinero y el oro son de El.
todo lo que este libro enseña es biblico.
La razon que nomas le di 4 estrellas es porque no es tan bueno como el otro libro que mencione, pero ayuda a fortalecer el punto.
si eres como yo que cree que es ingusto darle el dinero de tu trabajo a la gente necesitada tal vez este libro no te convesca y tendras que leer mas libros sobre el tema como lo hice yo. One of the best modern devotionals available

Ive bought this book now 8 times. I have given coppies to friends, led small groups with it, and used the teaching/group material. Francis' passion for a life completely surrendered to God shines through the book. At times Chan reveals his reformed leanings in subtle ways that does not detract for any non-reformed tradition. Chan's work is one that I regularly re-read and continue to draw insight from. 8 years after its publication this book still stands as an excellent devotional work that is accessible for all readers.

Motivating and Honest

This book was recommended to me by a friend. My wife and I decided to read it together, we were not familiar with Francis Chan before picking up this book.

I found it to be quite refreshing and challenging. The videos that accompany the chapters are a nice resource and we enjoyed the way they complemented the material. We are both in full time ministry but we felt challenged by what Chan has to say about going all out for God.

We did run into a bit of a bump. I take issue with his statement that there is no such thing as a lukewarm Christian. I find it does not match up with my understanding of what scripture teaches about salvation. Having watched videos of Chan's sermons since and now having read his second book, I'm not sure that Chan believes it either. Not the way it comes across in this book anyway. Which makes me glad to some extent as I think it implies that some level of work is required to gain and keep salvation.

That said, I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to others. We have erred for too long on the side of comfort and putting ourselves first. Too many American's that think they are Christians are not. There are too many that are Christians but they are grieving the Spirit and living a life they no longer need to live. They are like dogs returning to vomit and don't even know it.

I appreciate Chan's honesty. Too many high profile Christians don't seem to want to deal with reality but seem intent on getting people in and then doing whatever wont offend them to keep them around. This is a great disservice and I think we see a tidal change that is beginning to take place.

Great book to challenge the status quo and how we have thought about our Christianity. I love the illustration of manure -helpful fertilizier when spread out but a smelly waste when in a pile. As Christians we need to be out in the world living out Christ's love.

Statistical Thinking Through Practical Stories

This book shows how statistical thinking works and how it's benefiting our lives. It's an easy-read book without a lot of jargon or, surprisingly, numbers. I found the book to be engaging - through the use of stories - and helpful in understanding something that otherwise could be quite dull.

"Statistical thinking is distinct from everyday thinking. It is a skill that is learned. ... many applied scientists routinely use statistical thinking on the job," the author says. Statistical thinking is also often counter-intuitive. And this was my biggest take-away from this interesting book.

Using the premise that we can learn statistical thinking and that we can apply it in everyday situations, Fung provides 10 stories to teach 5 big principles of statistical thinking:

1. Variability over Averages: Statistical average isn't the key, deviation from the average is.
2. Correlation over Cause and Effect: Cause and effect might provide rational explanation, but unexplained correlation is also useful and quicker to find.
3. Group differences over Group averages: Differences within groups are hidden by averaging groups together.
4. Errors are both positive and negative: Minimizing mistakes creates mistakes of a different kind.
5. The Impossible really is Impossible: Don't believe what is too rare to be true.

The stories are applications of these principles in things we're all interested in. Like, the shortest waiting time at Disneyland, finding the source of a deadly E. coli outbreak, financial credit scores, highway traffic meters, steroid testing in Major League Baseball, SAT test writers, lie-detector tests, uncovering a lottery scam, and the safety record of airlines.

With Depth, And Figures To Support

It is hard not to make the comparison between "Numbers Rule Your World" and "Freakonomics". Even the book has made a reference once. Ten real life case studies are used, paired up in five chapters, to illustrate how different aspects of statistics affect our lives. Blogger statistician Kaiser Fung has made the topic surprisingly accessible, narrated in an engaging manner. Each chapter, the author picks two contrasting statistically related topics, juxtaposes them by taking turn to have the story told, and arrives at a conclusion. The narration is honest, impartially inquired from different angles. One of the author's objectives - besides convincing us that like it or not, numbers play a major role in our world today - I believe, is to expand our mind and horizon when interpreting certain situations as numbers are presented. And to appreciate what goes on behind the scene in your everyday life.

To impart the various aspects of statistical thinking upon his readers, the author uses the case studies of highway engineers versus Disney `Imagineers', epidemiologists versus credit modelers, insurers versus test developer (education), anti-doping agencies (sport) versus polygraph (lie detector), and the chances of jet crashes versus jackpots. Each case study - unlike Freakonomics - is backed up sufficiently by figures and facts. At times, I have to slow down my reading and think through the numbers, which I do greatly appreciate.

In practical term, how would reading "Numbers Rule Your World" help your work and life? For one, when you take in the news around you, you may wish to see things in a different perspective. Should you take in the reported figures on the papers as they are? Why are things or processes made that way? Some see an imminent risk, others do not. Should you follow the crowd? At the end of the book, the author has made a bold statement that if you know how to use numbers in making everyday decisions, you rule the world. While I am unsure if most of us has the ability and even access to a reliable data-set in using numbers in making decisions, this book does change the way how I see this world operates when it comes down to numbers.

About the Author
About the Authors
Sheila and Jane have been colleagues and friends for… well, let’s
just say a long time. As English as a Second Language (ESL)
teachers, they worked together on lots of projects… and had lots of
fun as they worked. A partnership was born!
Together, Jane and Sheila have teaching credentials in several
states and two continents. With years and years… and years… of
experience (they just don’t want to count them all, ha!), they have
taught ESL to little kids, big kids, university students, adults, company
executives, and other teachers in the U.S. and Europe (both
online and in regular classroom settings).
Both Sheila and Jane have served as members of the New Jersey
Department of Education Advisory Committee for ESL/Bilingual
Education. They’ve facilitated online ESL training courses for teachers
through the NJ DOE professional development program. Sheila
has held several leadership positions scoring teacher candidate responses
for an international testing company, and Jane has written
ESL test questions and rated English as a Foreign Language exams
for another internationally recognized testing company. (They teach,
they test, they score!)
They have won many awards for excellence in teaching, including
two Teacher of the Year awards, and corporate citations for excellence.
They’ve given numerous presentations and have written curriculum
and syllabi for diverse ESL populations. Add to this some fun
teaching projects in Spanish, public speaking, drama, writing… and,
we’re not kidding, even soccer skills and you’ve got two writers who know how to have a good time writing a book!
Jane is now the Director of ESL Services for Emory College of Arts
and Sciences in Atlanta, Georgia. Sheila is a lecturer in the English
Language Program at the University of Pennsylvania, and continues
to teach, write and consult in New Jersey and New York. Although
they live several states away, both are happy to find time to work
together on fun projects… like this book!

We’ve always loved English—the sound of the words, the fun of
the idioms, and the interesting way the words work together. We
also know that learning all this stuff can be a challenge to English
language learners. And that’s where our book comes in!
English the American Way: A Fun ESL Guide to Language and
Culture in the U.S. is your very own ... well, guide, to... yes, American
language and culture. You’ll find tons (a lot!) of vocabulary, all of it
used in real-life ways. We’ve included tons of informal language—the
stuff you really hear every day. And we take a look at American customs—
birth to death, and everything in-between!
We hope this book will be a help in your adventure learning English.

How This Book Works
This book has 21 units packed with language and culture!
Each unit has a main topic divided into two or three cultural readings. In these readings
and the dialogues that follow, you’ll find real English, not the simplified language
you find in most ESL books. The units are full of vocabulary and informal language—
tons of idioms, phrasal verbs and slang—bold within the text, then listed at the end of
each section with a simple explanation. Listen to the CD for native speaker pronunciation
of the dialogues, then pause and repeat to practice!
Look for grammar reminders, idiomatic expressions, culture tips, and fun facts.
Oh, and don’t forget to check your understanding (and memory) with the special
review sections. You’ll find them after every three units.

But how do you meet them?
Making new friends is an exciting part of moving to a new place, but sometimes it’s hard to know just how formal to be with new people. Americans are usually very casual. They’re also very friendly. This is a good thing, but it can be tricky. Everyone knows that good old basic English phrase, “Hello. It’s nice to meet you.” Oh, yeah, we bet you were ready for that. Well, you may be ready, but then you may be surprised to learn that you won’t hear that phrase very often. “Hello. It’s nice to meet you” is okay for first-time introductions, but when friends meet socially, the conversation will probably sound more like this: ALAN: Hey, Lia! It’s good to see you.
LIA: You, too. I haven’t seen you in a few days. How are you? How’s it going?
ALAN: Not bad. I’m so busy with the classes I’m taking. How about you?
LIA: I’m okay. I know you’re busy with classes. My job’s really hectic this time of year, too. What’s new with you?
ALAN: Nothing much. I’m on my way to the mall. I need some time off! Do you remember Lana? She’s there. Ha! She’s always at the mall! I think a lot of our friends plan to just hang out at the mall tonight.
LIA: Who? Oh yeah. I remember Lana. She’s the one with the scary-looking dog. I don’t want to hang out with that dog!
ALAN: Ha! You aren’t afraid of that little tiny dog, are you? Well, I’m sure Rover isn’t at the mall.
LIA: Actually, I’m headed to the mall later, anyway. There’s a huge sale going on. I think they’re open extra late.
ALAN: Great! Maybe I’ll see you there.
LIA: Sounds good. We’re both good shoppers! If I get there before you leave, maybe I’ll see you. After all, we aren’t leaving until we see all the sales. And I’m not leaving until I have some cute new shoes!

Good Resource

This book is great for our students. Although they get grammar and vocabulary practice in class, the dialogues are very good at putting the language of everyday life into the American cultural context, colloquial speech included. They get better exposure to English as they will actually hear it. The CD lets them listen to the dialogues at home to practice their listening skills. Although we've just started using the book, I'm pleased with how it's going. I'm looking forward to progressing through it in the coming months.

I view this book as more of a supplemental resource for our students since it assumes a working knowledge of basic English. That working knowledge is what our classes are developing. It would not be appropriate for true beginners. After three semesters of our once-a-week class, I find our students are ready to start with the book, albeit moving slowly at first.

If you are working with English learners at an intermediate level, I would recommend you take a look at this book. Whether or not you use it as your primary resource, I think you'll find it's useful.

Overall, it's a good value considering it includes the CD with the book.

Excellent learning tool!

English the American Way is exactly what the subtitle promises: a FUN ESL guide to Language and Culture in the U.S. The authors clearly enjoy their subject matter, and their classes must be excellent as well. The dialogues are witty and in real-life language, designed to smooth out bumpy areas in daily discourse. I work at a parish church that is 50/50 English/Spanish, where children are embracing English rapidly, but sometimes are called upon to interpret for their parents. This book would be a great tool for families as well as classes--the dialogues won't sound forced to the kids, and the families can have fun together improving their grasp of idiomatic American English. Many of the Spanish-speaking adults I work with are unsure of themselves in English (though their English is always far better than my Spanish!), and have trouble finding time for classes. This book would be a great resource for people to start to learn on their own, and have a really good time doing it. I also appreciate the effort taken to explain certain idioms and structures (why "I'll" is pronounced eye-ll and not ill, for example; or why "hanging around" doesn't literally mean hanging from rafters)--it's given me a greater love for my own native tongue (and a real sense of its complexity for those coming to the language for the first time). I love this book, and am recommending it to people in my parish and in the social service agencies around town. It's a real gift to the ESL canon!

This is perfect book to learn everyday English.

I purchased this to study and tutor my student.(I'm not from U.S) After I came to U.S, I had a real hard time to learn about the culture, idioms or phrases that are used in everyday conversations. This book has not only useful dialogue examples, but also tons of tips and information that will help people who just moved to US. I only wish this book came out early when I was trying to understand and adapt myself to the culture.. Hopefully other students will learn fast with this book, so they can survive in the new country with less suffering. :P
