This is a decent historical and popular-science account of the Zika virus intended for a general audience. McNeil is a deft and effective science journalist, and keeps the book interesting and informative. I enjoyed his account of tracking down a small group of scientists who had come down with Zika virus (prior to the outbreak), proving that human-to-human exposure existed. The accounts of microcephaly were jarring, but illustrated the author's points about prevention. One qualm I had was that at times, he seemed to deemphasize the severity of Guillain Barre syndrome, an autoimmune-mediated reaction against nerve cells causing severe weakness. Though it is true that patients can make a full recovery, a subset of patients are left with disability and in the acute phase, patients are at risk for respiratory compromise and cardiac arrhythmias. Additionally, the subtype of neuropathy (acute motor axonal neuropathy) most associated with Zika virus tends to cause a more severe motor weakness than the typical Guillain Barre triggered by other inciting infections and have a more prolonged recovery.

This is a good book for a general audience, and the Q/A section at the end is accessible for most readers. If you are looking for a more precise account of Zika's effects on the developing brain, JAMA Pediatrics (11/3/16 issue) published a very thorough literature review on the defects associated with congenital Zika. As a neurologist-in-training I found this book to be a bit simplistic, but a good starting point for starting a dialogue with patients asking questions about Zika. While he does make some controversial recommendations re- pregnancy and planning, most of his suggestions (using mosquito repellant, avoiding endemic areas in the summer if possible, covering skin as much as possible when in high-risk areas) are good common practice.

...you should read this book. It is the clearest description of the way the current issues with Zika have been managed by governmental health agencies. As a practicing OB/GYN, I learned a lot from this book. The Q&A at the end is one of the clearest presentations of the facts about Zika that I have seen.

Per the author's predilection, the book contains very little regarding the axiomatic approach to geometry (save for a single chapter on the history of non-Euclidean geometry), but two Appendices provide a detailed treatment of Euclid's and Hilbert's axiomatics. Perhaps the most important aspect of this course is the problems, which appear at the end of each chapter and are supplemented with answers at the conclusion of the text. By analyzing and solving these problems, the reader will become capable of thinking and working geometrically, much more so than by simply learning the theory. Ultimately, the author makes the distinction between concrete mathematical objects called "geometries" and the singular "geometry", which he understands as a way of thinking about mathematics. Although the book does not address branches of mathematics and mathematical physics such as Riemannian and Kähler manifolds or, say, differentiable manifolds and conformal field theories, the ideology of category language and transformation groups on which the book is based prepares the reader for the study of, and eventually, research in these important and rapidly developing areas of contemporary mathematics.

This includes many instructive problems that force students to think through key concepts (like collisions where students calculate the lost mechanical energy), problems with conceptual questions (e.g. why a ball actually rolls farther up an incline in the presence of friction than it does sliding without friction), and review problems grouped by a theme (such as one about a chimp who stole physics à la the Grinch). Involved problems are included to build fluency in the major problem-solving strategies, like combining conservation of energy and momentum. Many problems are broken down into parts to help guide students along – that is, you can check your answer to part (a) before moving onto part (b).

About the Author
Chris McMullen is a physics instructor at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He earned his Ph.D. in phenomenological high-energy physics (particle physics) from Oklahoma State University in 2002. Originally from California, he earned his Master's degree from California State University, Northridge, where his thesis was in the field of electron spin resonance. He has published several papers on the prospects for discovering large superstring-inspired extra dimensions at the Large Hadron Collider. The author has been making creative homework, quiz, and exam problems to engage and challenge physics students for several years, which have been compiled together in these volumes.

An excellent collection of physics problems

As a high school physics teacher I am always on the lookout for new physics problems to give my students. Chris McMullen's collection of problems is an excellent resource. The problem's in McMullen's book differ from a traditional physics textbook's problems in that they are indeed creatively presented. Most physics textbooks have very dry problems. McMullen's problems are presented with a bit of humor. Almost all of the problems revolve around monkeys, chimps, apes, or related primates participating in physics shenanigans. There are monkey olympics, sumo wrestling orangutans, a physics grinch, and Dr. Seuss analogies. All-in-all a superb collection or problems for a high school physics teacher.

Chris Hackley is Professor of Marketing at the School of Management, Royal Holloway University of London.
