Beautiful images, terrible book design.

Henrik Purienne's images are really easy to enjoy. Beautiful girls who all look like they've spent the day relaxing at the beach in various states of dress (or undress). Most of the photographs appear to be reproduced from recent issues of Mirage magazine, which Purienne is the creator of, or American Apparel campaigns that he shoots. Some of his best work from his archive (that I've seen on his website over the years) are missing and that's kind of disappointing. But my biggest issue with the book, which is bad enough that I would reduce 2-stars from my rating is that many of the layouts in the book are of vertical images printed as a two-page spread. So in a few cases, there's a photo of a woman's face, but the book's gutter runs right through the center of her face. It's not very good looking and simply having a vertical image laid out "sideways" so the book must be turned to view it is not a good decision. Another minor critique is that several pages are wasted on filler images that do not add anything to Purienne's purpose as a photographer. For instance, I don't think anyone who is a fan of Purienne's work is remotely interested in seeing a 2-page spread of an inflatable raft or a full page image of flamingos.

The image has a snap shot quality, in accord to the style of the photographer, which is wholly expected.
It meets my expectation and the layout art direction is simple but fits this book.

I have never had a photo book receive so much attention at my home. Everyone loves this book and cannot put it down. Beautifully shot (in film) and gorgeous women. Henrik truly has a gift.

Good Book But VERY Basic Instruction

Not a bad book but it is very simplistic. It's almost to the point of "You blow gently into the pointy end and sound comes out the other end". The lessons are very basic and are easy to follow furthermore the accompanying CD allows practice time in each track so that the student can hear what the concept being taught should sound like then the student can practice it a time or two and them hear it again from the CD.

There are some additional songs included on the CD just for listening and they are quite good. The instruction is basic and easy to follow. If you have never played a Native American Flute (NAF) at all then this is a good place to start. If you have played a NAF for more than a couple of hours then the book Understanding The Gift is probably better suited to your needs.

If you're undecided then buy this book and listen to all the tracks on the accompanying CD. You can't go wrong.

Good book to get started quickly - great for designers

I chose four stars because it doesn't cover Javascript as much as I expected. The topic of Javascript is quite dense, which the size of the book can't do it justice, but it would've been nice to introduce some techniques in Javascript, like assigning new objects to properties of objects and what contexts are used - things like that. The most that's covered is jQuery, which I appreciated the manner of which it was clearly written and concise. In fact, I was able to memorize jQuery much faster in this book than the jQuery pocket reference from O' Reilly and even videos on the topic.

After going at it for a full week, I feel confident in using jQuery - this is because the author always gave practical examples in how to use a particular function, so recalling the code from memory is easy. There are some nice sections like form handling, and some advice like using the .filter method that will go a long way. It goes over event handlers, animation, and even mobile jQuery design. It's these little things that I liked because it gives the reader a direction without throwing everything all at once along with abstract definitions in order to confuse you. In some areas, Javascript is used to describe what's going on under the hood, so that can be illuminating.

I haven't tried out the section on AJAX yet, but I've been having this little book with me wherever I go to study the core languages.

In sum, I think it's worth it if you want to have a working knowledge of jQuery without moving into advanced territory too quickly.

Awesome Resource for JavaScript Developers

This book has been a great resource. It is small which makes it easy to find things and has been invaluable for me when I can't quite remember how do do something with JavaScript or jQuery. I can usually quickly find an example in this book that covers what I am trying to do with a simple code example that is easy to adapt.

For example, the other day I was trying to animate some menu actions and looked at the animation chapter and was able to easily figure out how to animate the show() and hide() functions. I also used the fadeTo() example to animate enabling and disabling of menu items.

It's just a great little book!

This is a great reference book for jQuery. It is great for beginners and people who want to learn (with easy examples) how to get started with jquery / javascript. I was able to hand this book off to one of our interns to touch up some jquery ui interactions as well as some basic js bugs and he was able to use this book to help him out. It is packed with examples and should help you on your path of becoming a js ninja :).

Loshitzky (Univ. of East London, UK) here expands on her earlier fine work on cinema and politics: The Radical Faces of Godard and Bertolucci (CH, Sep'95, 33-0195) and Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen (CH, Jul'02, 39-6318). She works through contemporary European films that foreground migration, with the goal of describing each film's view of 'fortress Europe.' Loshitzky returns to Bernardo Bertolucci in Besieged (1998), while picking out Godardian elements in both Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995) and Michael Winterbottom's 'Camp Trilogy' (In This World, Code 46, The Road to Guantanamo). She also discusses the Swiss film Journey of Hope (1990) and Stephen Frears's Dirty Pretty Things (2002). The range of films Loshitzky takes on is wide, but she makes no claim for comprehensiveness. She notes that she selects 'hegemonic' rather than 'minority discourse' films, i.e., films made by 'hosts' rather than 'strangers.' Given that principle of selection, this reviewer could have done with more unmasking of hegemonic ideology and less letting the films speak--however critically--for themselves.
