I highly recommend passing on this book. While it is very up to date, unfortunately there is a lot of information that is useless of just wrong. The information is presented in a very unprofessional manner such as spending a page talking about how the author enjoys a specific channel on Twitch. The content is easy to read, but that is because it is very informal.
You will likely come across a few names of key people and inventions that changed the communications world, but for the most part you will find nothing of value.

About the Author
Alice Artzt, whom Guitar international Magazine has called "America's best player", made her solo concert debut in London in 1969. Since then critics in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas have unanimously acclaimed her performances as a soloist, in concertos with orchestra, and in chamber music groups. She studied guitar with Julian Bream, Ida Presti and Alexandre Lagoya, and composition with Darius Milhaud at Aspen Colorado, and at Columbia University where she earned a degree in musicology. In addition to her concert performances, Alice Artzt also appeared frequently on TV and radio, and has been on the juries of many international guitar competitions (CAG, GFA, Toronto, Segovia NYU, Rodrigo, and Alessandria). She has made 13 solo records (LP or CD), and has written two books on guitar technique (The Art of Practising and Rhythmic Mastery), as well as many articles on music in various magazines. She has taught for the past 45 years in private lessons and in master classes all over the world. (Several of her instructional videos are on YouTube.) This is a great book to have at home or on the road ...

This is a great book to have at home or on the road (since it weighs less than 3 OZ!) The volume of useful information concentrated in this 25 page book could easily fill 100 pages, and the value of the information is priceless. The book explains what the art of practicing means, describes the optimal sitting, left and right hand positions and potential problems to avoid, and provides advice on how to invent exercises for right and left hands that address your own specific technical problems. The author also provides several hundreds of exercises that would benefit players at any level. After playing those exercises my right hand became well balanced and technically proficient.

All guitarists SHOULD work through this book

This book has been nothing short of life-altering for me. Years ago, I tried to understand how virtuoso guitarists are able to play without mistakes, with smoothness, ease, flow and seemingly minimal finger movement and then, I found this book! My world was really turned upside down. I abandoned my quite extensive repertoire, (at that time), and focused on the exercises in the book. The first two months was not easy. That pinky kept jumping up! Then when I eventually got it right, I wanted more and more.

After many months of playing nothing but the exercises in the book, I started dabbling in the pieces again. The results were astonishing! It felt as if I was not even doing the playing. It was as if my fingers were walking through the pieces by themselves! (I know that sounds exaggerated, but it REALLY was my experience). I did not have to exert the same effort as before, and I was getting more music, more beauty and more everything than I had ever gotten out of the guitar. My guitarist friends were amazed. When I played anything, it became standard behaviour for them to get up to look at my hands from all possible angles, to see what I was doing. I wanted all of them to do the exercises in the book!

If there is a “magic formula” for reaching concert level guitar playing, I believe this book teaches it. I have returned to the exercises in this book and to the guitar after many years of absence. I have given myself a time line, and then I will record an album. I believe in this book that much! I am eternally thankful to The Force which led me to finding it when I did.

I agree with all the comments posted by previous reviewers. I am a beginning-intermediate classical guitarist and find the book extremely valuable. It provides needed exercises for improving one's basic skills, and thoughtful discussion on the rationale and benefits for each exercise. I highly recommend it for anyone studying classical guitar and striving to improve their technique.

A history, not a bushcraft book

I bought this book thinking that in it would be bushcraft and how to handle life in the northern boreal forest.

There is little of either of these in the book. It is more of a history of the early settlement northern Canada, particularly that of The Hudson's Bay Company, with some description of flora and fauna thrown.

Within its context, it is a well-written entertaining book. Just don't expect much bushcraft if you buy it.

A Great Book

This is a great book, if you have not seen Ray's series Northern Wilderness. It is a GOOD book if you HAVE seen the series because it pretty much repeats what he related in the series. Either way, I recommend owning it. It is definitely a keeper!

In this book, Ray covers the great explorers of Canada including my favorite Samuel Hearn. What these great men accomplished opened up not only Canada, but the US as well. The tactics and principles that these men developed were copied by every other backwoodsman and explorer -- and are still being copied today.

As one reviewer has said, this is not a book on the techniques of bushcraft, nor was it intended to be. Ray has already written, what is to be written on those subjects. This book is a book on the history of Canadian bushcraft and reiterates the guiding principle of what Ray has always espoused:

By adopting aboriginal techniques, technology and knowledge you can survive and even exist in the bush.

Just to reinforce what others have said ...

... this is not a book containing practical information about bushcraft skills or the natural world of the boreal forest. The back cover blurb is quite deceptive in this regard, so please just be aware. It is primarily a history of the exploration of the place that would come to be called Canada by the various agents of the European fur trading companies, and it is not the most compellingly written history to be had. It is an okay book, but not necessarily one worth spending one's hard earned cash on. If this era is of interest to you, consider checking it out from a library, spending a couple hours with is as a survey of the history of the Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company and the search for the Northwest Passage, and then move on to more interesting and well-written accounts of same. There are some nice color photographs throughout. The main underlying thesis of the book -- that wise intelligent newcomers treated the North American continent's indigenous inhabitants with respect and adapted to the new environment by adopting the skills and methods of those who had lived there for centuries -- is a bit of a no-brainer for me. Maybe such a perspective would be a revelation to some folks, and maybe those folks would find this book more useful on a conceptual level than I did. All the same I respect Ray Mears and find him eminently likeable. But this book -- meh.

Arthur Byne's Diplomatic Legacy

I have used Arthur Byne's many books as a reference for many years. He was the most influential architectural historian in regard to Spanish architecture, particularly as to identifying the importance of Spanish Renaissance architecture and form--something few, if any other historian considered as a singular example of a style and not simply a copy of Italian Renaissance. This book takes his significance further through going behind the scenes to explain what led to his research in his own very interesting life. Not many people remember his influence with Julia Morgan and how San Simeon came to be. I would recommend this book to anyone interested Spanish architecture, Julia Morgan, San Simeon or William Randolph Hearst, the owner and builder of the Hearst Castle in California--San Simeon.

Finally, a biography on Arthur Byne

Being a history and architecture buff, I wanted to learn more about the influence of Spanish architecture in the United States. Much is written by Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley. It was only natural to want to learn more about their lives and how an American could know so much about the architecture of Spain. The influence of what is brought over by people like Arthur Byne is clearly seen in architecture all over the US. I enjoyed the photographs and drawings that illustrate Spanish design summarized in his first four books.

Excellent portrait of a man who was very important in the Spanish antique collecting of William Randolph Hearst

A well researched, well written look at a very complex figure. This also shows a recent point in Spanish history and Byne's involvement and influence on several different levels. William Randolph Hearst, an American media mogul until his death in 1951 at age 88, was an art and antique collecting client of Byne. It's an enjoyable read with great information about some of the "high rollers" of the time.
