some good basics, but undermined by some thin readings

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't. There are some interesting arguments here, especially in the first two chapters. For example, Nishime argues that in multi-racial Asian characters sexuality becomes a metaphor for race, and does a solid job of making Keanu Reeves interesting--something I would have considered impossible.

But there are deep problems which undercut the main argument. Most of all, Nishime is never particularly interested in how any of the texts looked at construct an audience. Instead, there is a blanket assumption that all of these texts are addressing a kind of generic liberal hegemony. I suppose that kind of abstraction is true enough for Vanity Fair, but really, Kimora Lee Simmons? As a result a text like Life in the Fab Lane is read as if if Simmons is introducing the problem of race to an educated white hegemony. But isn't that show aimed at an audience fully aware of problems of race and willing to be entertained by them? That's not meant to be a rhetorical question. Where is the research on the show's demographics and what it means that this kind of play gets watched (and by who?).

More generally, in a book that spends so much time on texts that have no artistic interest (sorry Keanu, but Kimora, you knew that was coming), the abiding interest here is the sociological argument. But because Nishime is covering such a limited range of texts, and refers only to theoretical arguments about society and culture, her broader critiques are very very unconvincing. The whole thing feels half baked at the moments that are most important--when she reaches for the most sweeping conclusions.

Maybe I'm most bitter at the chapter on Battlestar Galactica, which is the main reason I read the book. The set up is good--Nishime points out the vacuity of the character of Hera, which is so true and an interesting place to begin. But she reads the show as an allegory of transnational adoption, and slots the colonials into the place of hegemonic America and the Cylons as the oppressed immigrant. Okay, there are certainly parts of the show that play with those memes, but to reduce the show to that is to ignore the most interesting aspects of the narrative. Nishime barely acknowledges the Cylons are machines, for example, and so ignores the very interesting meditation on what makes a human human which is central to the show. Likewise, she never mentions that race is not ignored in the show but displaced into the question of the twelve planets and that far from being hegemonic, the Colonials are a collapsed, bitterly divided, and terribly flawed group who, in the heartstrings of the show, have never really justified their right to exist.

So, I regret the purchase. If I were you, I'd check it out of the library, skim the bits on Keanu and Kimora, and mine the footnotes.

Content is OK, quality is subpar

I ordered this book for a Political Science class I am currently enrolled in. While the content of the book is obviously biased, it is very informative. My gripe is with how cheaply made the book is. Every page I turn ends up falling out of the book, by the time I am done with the book I imagine that none of the pages will be connected to the binding anymore. I've never had a paperback book be so cheaply made and I'm afraid I will lose some of the pages eventually. Definitely a disappointment for the $130 price tag.

Beginning with the Phoenician traders more than 3000 years ago, mining today is an international business. This book has tried to reflect this international character by presenting a snapshot of the world of mining through a series of case studies. The publication is devoted strictly to underground mining and can be used for the training of new mining engineers as well as a reference book for those already in the field. The case studies in this book cover the commodity range from iron ore to diamonds extracted by operations located in all corners of the world. The book consists of 11 sections making up 77 chapters. The sections are entitled as follows: General Mine Design Considerations; Room-and-Pillar Mining of Hard Rock Room-and-Pillar Mining of Soft Rock; Longwall Mining of Hard Rock; Shrinkage Stopping; Sublevel Stoping Cut-and-Fill Mining; Sublevel Caving; Panel Caving; Foundations for Design; and Underground Mining Looks to the Future. For a New Start Professional to Seasoned Miner, this is a Great Book to Have in your Reference Library

I bought this book and another for an upcoming Professional Exam. Unfortunately, so while I studied and graduted in Engineering I did not specifically study mining engineering in college and pretty much need to learn an entire discipline in 3 months when it takes 4 or more years to do so.

In stark contrast to another book I purchased, this book is a standard of excellence. Not only is much of the information useful, clear and noteworthy it is easy to read and reads well. In other words, even though the book is purely technical in nature it was genuinely an enjoyable survey.

Most if not all of the contributors wrote compelling case studies, were forthright in the uniqueness of their situations and still tied it back to general principles and theories. They were frank, honest, ethical and seemed eager to pass wisdom.

Parts that were principle based and theoretical were in recognizable nomenclature, followed easily understood derivations and were bolstered with real examples that were also easy to follow. Calculations were straightforward and to the point. There were no surprise derived equation as in, Substitute Eq 5.1.300 in chapter 5 into this equation 29.33.200 in chapter 29 to get this partial equation for...

Finally, and I admit that this is silly, but in a dry world of handbooks where most technical reference books are either an offending bright primary color (ie SME Handbook 2nd Edition) or basically just a blank cover with letters, this book has a pretty cool cover images. Yes, it is silly, but into bought it and I am glad I did.
