Very Difficult To Read
By taking a rest
Ms. Pat Barker is a wonderful writer. I have read and enjoyed almost all her work, and while the tone is rarely joyous, nothing prepares you for, "Blow Your House Down". By saying difficult I do not mean complex, rather uncomfortable. The degrading world that she portrays makes Dickensian England appear to be family entertainment.
The story is generally about women who are prostitutes, generally not by choice or to feed an addiction. Most are Mothers paying the bills after the men have finished their abuse and left. Specifically the story centers on a time when a serial killer of prostitutes is at large. This is not a lengthy book and it is not filled with dozens of murders. However, once during the book Ms. Barker portrays a murder and its aftermath in a manner so shocking I put the book down before continuing.
The guts this writer has are amazing. There is nothing stylized, clever or fascinating about this crime. She serves up the act of murder in as disturbing a manner as I have ever read. It is raw and graphic, and totally appropriate, but it is brutal reading. This is not TV nonsense; there is nothing to soften her story. It is about as razor edged as it could be. I honestly cannot imagine it being more coldly depicted.
The writer is not heartless, the book is also full of friendships and compassion, however the two do not mix, and she does not give the reader or her characters a break. There is no pause, no rest, no easing of the tremendous pressure even at the book's end. Ms. Barker writes brilliantly and if you can take her unadorned view of reality you will have a reading experience you will not soon forget.

this book shouldn't be out of print

a slim paperback from pat barker. tightly written with believeable dialogue. it describes the yorkshire ripper crimes from the perspective of the women most affected, those working as prostitutes in the north of england. anyone familiar with this series of crimes will remember the shadow it cast over these english cities and the women who lived in them. pat barker's women jump off the page as genuine. her descriptions of domestic life could almost be described as lyrical if it wasn't for the tautness of her prose. the chapter written from the offenders point of view is perhaps the weakest part of what is a very strong short book. tight. succinct. probably a lesson in there for modern writers who often seem to use too many words to say too little. worth reading not only for the suspense in the plot but especially for the beauty and directness of the writing itself.

About the Author
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1885, Robert Collier trained to become a priest early in his life, before settling on a career in business, achieving success in the fields of advertising, publishing, and engineering. After recovering from a chronic illness with the help of mental healing, Collier began studying New Thought, metaphysical, and success principles. He distilled these principles into a popular and influential pamphlet series, The Secret of the Ages, in 1926. He began issuing a second pamphlet series called The Secret of Gold in 1927 and completed it the following year under the title The Life Magnet. He died in 1950.

Changed my life...

It was a very good book at a very rough time in my life. I picked it up in Bangkok on my way to Bangladesh. This was my third trip to Bangladesh and I was a broken man, that thought he was cursed. This book not only made me realize I am very blessed it opened my eyes to the power of the holy spirit in my life. I went from victim to a man in control of his life. The "secret" shared in this book works and is taken straight from the bible. Since reading my wife has red it and we give it as gifts to friends and family.

This book is like Think And Grow Rich, but with an explicitly Biblical take on success. I have used the book to guide my scripture study. I've read it maybe 10 times now. Very inspiring. The times I have applied the book to my life, I have been astonished at my successes. Worth a purchase, worth a read.

This book was recommended on The Huff Post on a blog about horror fiction. Strangely, it is a horror book, but not in the usual sense. I enjoyed reading this book and it completely held my attention. I'm not sure I was totally satisfied with the ending, but maybe all good books leave you with questions at the end.

About the Author
R.H. van Gulik, (1910-1967) studied Law and Oriental Languages at the Universities of Leiden and Utrecht, and in 1935 took his doctor's degree with honours on a thesis dealing with the horse cult in India, Tibet, and the Far East. Having entered the Netherlands Foreign Service in that same year, he held posts in Tokyo, Chunking (Nanking), Washington, New Delhi, Beirut, and Kuala Lumpur. His last posting was as Netherlands ambassador in Japan. Dr. van Gulik, who, after his thesis, continued to make valuable contributions to Sanskrit and Far Eastern studies, is also well-known as the author of the series of detective stories about Judge Dee. Paul R. Goldin is Associate Professor of Chinese Thought at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of "Rituals of the Way: The Philosophy of Xunzi" (Open Court, 1999), and "The Culture of Sex in Ancient China" (University of Hawai i Press, 2002). He is also a co-editor of the "Reader of Traditional Chinese Culture" (University of Hawai'i Press)."

No guilt

The ancient Chinese believed that human sexuality was analogous to 'cosmic' procreation. They saw absolutely no difference between rain wetting a field and semen fertilizing the womb of a woman, or between a damp soil ready for sowing seed and a moist vagina ready for penetration.

Their sexuality was never tainted by morality (guilt) and could never be a sin.

The ancient Chinese palette went from the most detailed biological pictures of copulation to the most spiritual experiences of love.

However, there were important differences between confucianism, taoism and tantrism.

The most conformist way of life was confucianism, which believed in biological immortality through offspring. Marriage was an important institution, but not an occasion for rejoicing. Music was prohibited for three days, because it was considered as a signal for the father that his son would soon take his place!

Taoists believed in physical immortality and tried to prolong life through different techniques: respiration (mastering the uterine respiration of the embryo), diets, gymnastics or heliotherapy imposing a harsh body regimen for its adepts.

A taoist 'alchemist' sect considered the woman's womb as a kind of chemist's cup capable of fabricating 'Life's Elixir' through copulation.

Certain sects organized mass copulations trying to put their followers in a mystical delirium and making them believe that they were invulnerable and invincible in combat. Powerful men used them in this sense for political goals.

Tantrism was a more difficult practice. Sexual intercourse had to take place when a woman was most fertile, but the man had to withhold ejaculation (coitus reservatus) in order to capture the yin of the woman and heighten his own vital powers.

Robert van Gulik (author of excellent 'Chinese' detective novels) treats this particularly difficult theme masterly.

He wrote a most stimulating book, not only for Chinese scholars.

Tremble-Tremble

At first I was skeptical of how I would like this play. You see, our high school is putting this on as their Fall Play. "Fools" will make you "tremble-tremble" with laughter! You'll want to read it by the "light of the drapes". It takes place in the Ukraine when it was still part of Russia in about the 1890's. Every person who was born in the village of Kulyenkitkov (ok, i spelt it wrong, so sue me)is very stupid, not knowing love or the thinking process. In this town you meet many wonderful characters including The Masgetrate who will live to be 80, though he's 79 right now, Yenchna the vendor who milks her cow upside down to get more cream, Slovitch the Butcher who is really quite stupid anyway, Something Something Snetsky who can't remember his own name, Mishkin the Postmaster who gives away people's mail to other people for enjoyment, Count Gregor Yousekevitch who makes the whole town tremble-tremble with fear, Dr. Nickolai Zubritsky who marks his book pages with maple syrup, Mrs. Lenya Zubritsky who set the drapes on fire because she couldn't find her candle, Sophia Zubritsky who is 19 and just recently learned to sit, and finally the new school master, Leon Tolchinsky who has come to break the curse Kulyenkitkov (sorry again, i spelt it wrong!!) How does he brake the (what do you call it? It sounds like nurse or maybe Hearse... OH!) curse? You'll just have to be a sport and read the play yourself...and remember, if you stay in the village long enough, you too will become a FOOL!

A foolish review of a foolish book.

"Fools," by Neil Simon, is one of the more humorous plays I have read in my lifetime. The Russian village of Kulyenchikov, a small, make-believe town is put under a curse, rendering its inhabitants completely stupid. Count Gregor, a name that makes the people of Kulyenchikov tremble in fear, cast this horrible spell. A young school teacher is sent to this town to educate a Sophia, a young, beautiful, and incredibly unintelligent lady of Kulyenchikov. On his way to Sophia's house, Leon meets many of the inhabitants, such as "Something Something Snetsky," and Yenchna the vendor who tries to sell flowers while claiming they are fish. Will Leon be able to teach the unteachable and break the curse of Russian Kulyenchikov? Simon had a lot of fun writing this play, as the readers will have a great time reading it. This play is utterly amusing, even hysterical! I would recommend it to and Neil Simon fans, and to anyone with a sense of humor.

I saw this in New York when it opened. It is very funny and not the typical "Neil Simon". It was fun to read it after all these years. This would be a great play for church or school venues.
