Drama and Negativity

I was hoping for a really good guide to the business side of Interior Design from an expert. This book was reccomended to me by another professional in the business as the "bible" of the business. I was hoping for insights for a well-run, prosperous, effecient and positive business. I was sorely disappointed. This book is negative, preachy, outdated, and angry. Written in a most uninspired manner and goes so far as to say things like, if you want your own business you better be prepared to give up bridge, tennis, dinner with your family... blah, blah, blah, or quite frankly your contract is to protect you, NOT your client. Hmmm, really, last I checked it is supposed to do both. Maybe it just does not represent the spirit in which I choose to do business. I was hoping for advise from someone who is better at this than I am, someone who may have streamlined the process and knows good time management. All the drama and negativity pulls your energy from whatever good information is present. I can see the wagging index finger of the writer as I read, no thank you.

I got a point and a half off - one wrong answer and an uncapitalized noun (my greatest struggle! )

A little more than a month into the semester, I was hit by a car and ended up missing a month of class lectures. The way the Netzwerk book is structured and the fact that I also studied A1 level using Netzwerk, I was able to stay caught up week-by-week while studying at home and staying connected with my instructor. My first test back to class, I got a point and a half off - one wrong answer and an uncapitalized noun (my greatest struggle!). In the end, I got an A- in the class and I really credit the way the Netzwerk textbooks are set up for my success.

About the Author

Excellent research methods text

Having taught research methods for library and information science for some years, and having spent a lot of time supervising and examining masters and PhD students, I was delighted when I found the first edition of Alison Pickard's book. This second edition builds on that and updates it. This text is sensible and practical without overlooking the metatheoretical assumptions underlying research activity. I particularly recommend the first chapter, which deals with major research paradigms in a straightforward, understandable way, laying a good basis for a discussion of the qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods methodologies. The methods discussed will be useful to researchers working in information science as well; as library studies.

Required reading for library researchers!

I found this book to be highly useful. As someone who is interested in research but who never had a formal research class, a book like this filled in a lot of the gaps for me. Although I read it from cover to cover in order to write a review for Catholic Library World, I know that I will be going back to it for ideas on expanding my research. Research Methods in Information includes practical exercises that will help the researcher learn the concepts that the author presents. Pickard has a clear and effective writing style. This is an excellent introduction to research methods, and could be used as a textbook in a research methodology course. It would make an excellent addition to any professional or personal library where there is interest in conducting research.

Weaker than the usual Perry Mason

Perry Mason stories are amongst my favourites when it comes to light, escapist reading. I have read a lot of them and I have found that most are very good, a few are really excellent, and just a few are disappointing.

Unfortunately, I consider this book to be one of those few disappointing ones. The plot is over-elaborate and unconvincing, and there is only a little bit of the fast-paced and brilliant courtroom dialogue that is the most enjoyable feature of most of the stories.

I fear that if someone read this as their first Perry Mason, it might put them off reading others, which would be a real shame. Read Perry Mason, but perhaps not this one!

WWII is causing wide-spread bloodshed, but on the Home Front murder is a family affair

It's 1943 and a soldier has been sent home on leave to recuperate from his wounds. Unfortunately, things are far from peaceful in the California mountain town. There's a wealthy industrialist and his two daughters and the oldest daughter's shady husband. First, an embezzlement becomes public knowledge, then there's a body, and (nearby) a buried clock set to the wrong time. And (of course) Perry Mason and his faithful, shrewd secretary Della Street are there to sort things out.

This is a peek into American life during the war years. Daylight Savings Time (called "War Time") has been introduced to save precious fuel. Drivers are urged to curtail travel and to drive at "tire conserving speeds." (Perry never does.) There's a tire rationing board and one major clue is the fact that only one of the suspects could have qualified for a new tire. And the street lights are doused to make cities and towns less attractive targets for air raids.

Like most novels written during the war, there's some heavy-handed patriotic propaganda and Gardner puts some speeches suited to a middle-aged writer into the mouths of his young characters. It's jarring, especially since he's normally clever about keeping his characters "in character."

One thing disturbs me. The case is a complicated one, and Perry just can't seem to get a grip on it. He follows several false trails and (although he's convinced of his client's innocence) he's on the ropes when it comes to trial. The D.A.'s office is openly gloating because THIS time Perry Mason doesn't have all of the inside information and THIS time they're going to beat him. In other words, they claim that he wins cases because his detective skill puts knowledge in his hands that would normally be known only by the police and the D.A.'s office.

Isn't "full disclosure" one of the basic principles of our legal system? I believe that both sides are required to disclose all evidence that will presented in the trial. Any surprises are reason to ask for a mistrial (or acquittal.) Was this not so in the mid-1900's?

Anyway, it's a pretty good mystery and the town has as nice a collection of slightly off-beat characters as Gardner ever dreamed up. Watching Perry almost defeated by the hot-shot young Assistant D.A. and then fighting his way back is what keeps us faithful to these dated, but well-written books.

Fun and different

I've been reading the Mason mysteries in the order published, and have just gone through a few with no actual murder trial. They're just as much fun with or without a trial, but it's always fun to see Mason in the courtroom.

In "The Case of the Buried Clock" we get introduced to an assortment of appealing characters long before Perry, Della, and Paul come on the scene. In the process of introductions, we find that an embezzler has been murdered. While this isn't the most baffling of Mason mysteries, it was a lot of fun. In my mind there were really only four suspects, which I narrowed quickly down to two. I pegged the wrong one for a while, but had the real culprit in mind many pages before the "reveal".

Additionally, the courtroom sequence was very different. Perry doesn't have much to go on for a long time and has to throw up smokescreens to get anything on the ADA assigned to the case. For this mystery, Perry is up against a new ADA ... a sharp young prosecutor from "back East". The solution of the case and vindication of Mason's client is also unusual. While the TV shows were rather formula, I've found that the books themselves are anything but ... Gardner kept things mixed up from book to book so that the reader never really knows what to expect.

In "Buried Clock" Gardner reached out for a bit more in the way of flowery prose than I've been used to, with vibrant descriptions of the mountain locale and many of his newly introduced characters. The story is set in 1942, during WWII. I missed one clue because of being unfamiliar with the details of tire rationing during the period. However, Perry didn't miss it, and it isn't one that you'll feel contributed or took away from your ability to find the solution yourself.

I notice as I write this "Buried Clock" is available as a loaner to Prime members. That's a great opportunity for you to try out a really entertaining mystery!

They show how to choose a screen name, sift through incoming requests, and sound "light and breezy" in ads and replies. The most troubling aspect of this book is that it works counterintuitively to the very essence of online dating. For example, the authors forbid women to take any initiative, telling them to wait 24 hours before responding to e-mail, never participate in Instant Messaging or chat rooms, answer all e-mail in three sentences or fewer of chipper-sounding rhetoric, and stop talking to a man who doesn't ask them out within four messages. Ellen Fein is a graduate of New York University and lives on Long Island, New York, with her husband and two children. Ever since she and Sherrie Schneider began weekly meetings in a Chinese restaurant years ago, lamenting their dating woes and discussing their friends' relationships, the two have been formulating and formatting their rules for dating that have now become so popular. They have come a long way, having been featured on Dateline NBC and the Today show, chronicled in People, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and USA TODAY and even spoofed in a skit on Saturday Night Live. Since the success of the first book, there have been several spin-offs, adaptations, and parodies of The Rules, written by other authors, but none have garnered the attention of the original.

Way too dated

I ended up having to skip large sections of this book because it's just too dated. I was hoping for more information about trying to weather the storm of online dating with texting and social media apps like Tinder, Facebook, Bumble, OKCupid... there's countless options out there and it's all so overwhelming. This book actually goes into a full blown explanation about what an "IM" is. Really???

There may be some tidbits in there that still resonate in today's plugged in world, but I found the short chapter on online dating more valuable in "It's just a F***ing date" than this entire book.

(1898): that there is a malaise in culture, and that literature's power to "infect" readers with the moral values of the author is a possible cure for this malaise. Exploring these ideas of estrangement within the contexts of earlier, contemporary, and later critical theory, Robinson argues that Shklovsky and Brecht follow Tolstoy in their efforts to fight depersonalization by imbuing readers with the transformative guidance of collectivized feeling. Robinson's somatic approach to literature offers a powerful alternative to depersonalizing structuralist and poststructuralist theorization without simply retreating into conservative rejection and reaction.

Both a comparative study of Russian and German literary-theoretical history and an insightful examination of the somatics of literature, this groundbreaking work provides a deeper understanding of how literature affects the reader and offers a new perspective on present-day problems in poststructuralist approaches to the human condition.
